ENHANCING SRH KNOWLEDGE FOR AGYWS IN DALLARI I KAYAMTI PROJECT

Anchor for Life Support and Resilience (ALSAR) implemented a community-based sexual and reproductive health (SRH) project for adolescent girls and young women, a fully self-funded initiative. This project focused on areas that are underserved and affected by crisis, targeting 50 AGYWS in Dallari 1, Kwayamti, Maiduguri, Borno State. The goal is to give adolescent girls the knowledge, and support they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
The project began by assessing the community’s needs and developing a curriculum. After that, a community safe space was used just for the sessions. We trained local female mentors to teach important topics like puberty, menstrual hygiene, the effects of teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence. The project also involved parents, school leaders, and religious figures in the community. To make sure the program would last and have a real impact, hygiene kits and learning materials were distributed to the girls. An awareness campaign was also conducted on local radio stations.
Key achievements included:
• An increase in SRH knowledge, confidence, and informed decision-making among adolescent girls and young women.
• Improved menstrual hygiene practices and a reduction in school absenteeism.
• Strengthening of caregiver support and the promotion of inclusive parenting.
• The establishment of sustainable peer networks and referral links for ongoing SRH support.
This project shows ALSAR’s strong commitment to empowering adolescent girls, promoting their health, dignity, and creating sustainable, community-led SRH solutions in conflict affected and underserved settings.
