INTEGRATED COMMUNITY ACTION FOR FLOOD MITIGATION IN STATE-LOW PROJECT

The State-Low-Cost community of Maiduguri faced a possible threat of flooding due to their blocked drainages, which is mostly caused by lack of coordinated community efforts to manage waste and maintain drainage systems. To combat this, Anchor for Life Support and Resilience (ALSAR) teamed up with the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) and the local residents to launch a flood mitigation initiative.

The project began with a specific effort to clear blocked drainage channels, followed by fumigation and awareness campaigns about proper waste management. This initiative was a crucial step in building a new foundation for long-term resilience and community-led coordination against future disasters. By clearing the drains and educating the residents, we did not only help to reduce immediate flood risks but also empowered the community to take charge of its own environment.

Key achievements included:
• Mitigating immediate flood risks through the clearing of blocked drainage channels.
• Empowering the community to take charge of its own environment through awareness campaigns on proper waste management.
• Building a new foundation for long-term resilience and community-led coordination against future disasters.

Through this initiative ALSAR built a crucial step for a new foundation of long-term resilience and community-led coordination in State-Low-Cost, against future disasters
